PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is perhaps the most adaptable material in the plastics family. It is a “chameleon” because, depending on the additives we use, it can be as rigid as a construction pipe or as soft and flexible as a medical tube.
In the molding world, PVC is famous for two things: exceptional chemical resistance and natural flame retardancy. While other plastics catch fire easily, PVC is inherently difficult to ignite, making it a top safety choice for electrical housings, wire connectors, and building components.
| Property | Rigid PVC (uPVC) | Flexible PVC (vPVC) | Why it Matters |
| Density (g/cm³) | 1.30 – 1.58 | 1.15 – 1.35 | Higher density provides structural “heft” |
| Tensile Strength | 35 – 55 MPa | 10 – 25 MPa | Rigid for frames; flexible for seals |
| Hardness | 70 – 90 Shore D | 50 – 90 Shore A | Covers everything from “pipe” to “rubber” |
| Flame Rating | V-0 (Self-extinguishing) | V-2 to V-0 | Top-tier safety for electronics |
| Molding Shrinkage | 0.1% – 0.5% | 1.0% – 2.5% | Very stable dimensions in rigid form |
PVC is an incredibly cost-effective material, but it requires specialized molding equipment. When heated, PVC can be “corrosive” to standard steel, so we use stainless steel molds or specialized coatings to protect the tooling.
In Injection Molding, rigid PVC is used for heavy-duty valves, pipe fittings, and electrical boxes. In Blow Molding, it’s a favorite for clear bottles that need to hold oils or harsh chemicals that would degrade other plastics.
Pro Tip: PVC is naturally UV resistant, meaning it can survive outdoors for years without turning yellow or becoming brittle. If your project involves plumbing, high-voltage electricity, or outdoor exposure, PVC is often the most economical and reliable solution.
