PC: The “Indestructible” Glass Substitute

If your product needs to be as clear as glass but as tough as a riot shield, Polycarbonate (PC) is the material of choice. Often called the “Titan” of the transparent world, PC is an amorphous engineering plastic that defies the usual trade-off between clarity and strength.

While acrylic might crack when dropped, PC absorbs the energy. It is the gold standard for high-performance applications like safety goggles, medical housings, automotive headlight lenses, and robust electronic casings.

The Precision Challenge

PC is a high-performance material, but it requires high-performance processing. It is “hygroscopic,” meaning it behaves like a sponge for moisture. If the resin isn’t dried perfectly before molding, the final part will have “silver streaks” or bubbles, compromising both its look and its strength.

In the mold, PC has a very high melt viscosity. It doesn’t flow like water; it’s more like thick honey. This means we use high pressures and temperatures to ensure it fills every corner of a complex design. The result, however, is a part with incredible dimensional accuracy and a premium, high-gloss finish.

Design Note: Because PC is so rigid, sharp corners can create “stress concentrations” that lead to failure. We always recommend adding generous radii (rounded corners) to your PC designs to maximize their legendary impact resistance.

Is your part going to be exposed to high temperatures or high-stress mechanical loads? I can help you decide if a PC/ABS blend is a better fit for your specific balance of cost and toughness.
