While most metal parts are designed to be as solid as possible, the magic of Powder Metallurgy (PM) in bearing design lies in what isn’t there: Micro-porosity. A self-lubricating bearing is essentially a high-strength metallic sponge that manages its own lubrication, making it the “install-and-forget” champion of the mechanical world.
The secret to its functionality is the Press-and-Sinter process:
Compaction: Metal powders (typically Bronze or Iron) are pressed into shape. We purposely control the pressure to leave a network of interconnected micro-pores.
Sintering: The part is heated just below its melting point. The metal particles fuse at their contact points, creating a rigid structural frame while keeping the internal “tunnel system” open.
Once sintered, the bearing is vacuum-impregnated with oil. It then operates on a simple but brilliant physics loop:
Stockage : The lubricant stays locked inside the micro-pores via capillary action.
Release: As the shaft begins to spin, thermal expansion (from friction heat) and mechanical pressure squeeze the oil out of the pores and onto the contact surface.
Recycle: When the machine stops and the bearing cools, the oil is sucked back into the metal “sponge”—ready for the next start.
Performance at a Glance
| Caractéristique | Technical Reality |
| Material Base | Sintered Bronze (Standard) or Sintered Iron (Heavy Duty) |
| Oil Content | Usually 18% to 25% by volume |
| Avantage | No external grease lines or manual maintenance required |
| Operating Feel | Extremely quiet compared to rolling-element bearings |
Because the lubrication is integrated into the metal’s DNA, these bearings are perfect for inaccessible locations—like the motor inside your laptop, the hinge of a car door, or the internal gears of a kitchen appliance. They offer a compact, cost-effective, and fail-safe solution that traditional liquid lubrication simply cannot match.
Do you need to replace a high-maintenance bearing with a “fit-and-forget” PM solution? I can help you specify the correct porosity level to ensure your assembly remains lubricated for its entire lifecycle.
