TPU: The “Shape-Shifter” Plastic

Imagine a material that has the elasticity of rubber but the processing ease of a plastic. That is TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane). It is the bridge between two worlds, offering incredible “stretch-ability” combined with extreme resistance to oil, grease, and abrasion.

In the molding world, TPU is the “tough guy” of flexible materials. Unlike standard rubber, which requires a slow curing process, TPU can be injection molded at high speeds, making it the top choice for protective phone cases, wearable tech, high-performance footwear, and industrial seals.

Flexibility Without the Weakness

The magic of TPU lies in its abrasion resistance. It is incredibly difficult to scratch or tear, which is why it’s used for “high-touch” products that need to look new for a long time. It also has a natural “soft-touch” feel that provides a premium grip without being sticky.

In Injection Molding, TPU requires precise temperature control. Because it is flexible, it can be tricky to “eject” from the mold—it likes to stick. We often use specialized mold textures or coatings to ensure the parts pop out cleanly without deforming.

Design Note: TPU is perfect for Overmolding. If you have a hard plastic part (like a handle) and want to add a soft, grippy layer on top, TPU bonds exceptionally well to materials like ABS or PC, creating a seamless, two-tone finish.
